From LA to Vegas:

. What kind of roadside stops (gas, restaurants) should one expect?

. What kind of side trips are worth making: parks, forests, desert
sites, ghost towns?

Thanks in advance.

Developed or desolate. Little inbetween. The trip only takes 4 hrs.
Unless you're driving a monster truck, a tank of gas should do it.

A few "mini vegas" attractions are on the way. Tons of "free" steaks.
A rollercoaster or two. There's a Shoney's or a Big Boy or some such
along the way. Never stopped. Nostolgic? Who knows. The giant
thermometer lost its charm now that the owners were busted for adding
10 or 15 degrees.

On that note, take your car maintenance seriously. The heat will
fry questionable radiators. My Mazda Protege (granted, a POS but
a fairly new POS) went dangeorusly high on the oil temp.

The only worthwhile side trip is the Hoover Dam, in my opinion.
Definitely go see it.
