Hi All

I need some advice on if this is do-able or not. This summer I plan on
driving from Shreveport, Louisiana to Las Vegas and....doing it in one
and a half days.

What I plan is this...
(These times are rough estimates)

Day one
Leave Shreveport at 5:00am and arrive in Dallas about 8:30am
30 min break
Leave Dallas at about 9:00am and arrive at Odessa,TX at 3:00pm
30 min break
Leave Odessa at 3:30pm and arrive at El Paso at 7:00pm
30 min break
Leave El Paso at 7:30 pm and arrive at Phoenix at 12midnight

Day two
Leave Phoenix at 9:00am and arrive at Las Vegas at 3:00pm

Sound crazy? do-able? My other option is
to go from Shreveport to El Paso and then next day on to Vegas.
Alternative routes? Suggestions? Tips for travelling such a long
distance? Thanks in advance.

If you plan on being in Dallas around 8:30-9 AM, be prepared for some heavy
traffic! Personally, I would leave earlier and probably take I-20 through
the south end of town and through Arlington and Ft. Worth. Watch your speed
through Arlington. Ft. Worth shouldn't be a problem.

Check out http://speedtrap.org for info...

Have fun!

Shorter route would take you through Amarillo and across I 40 to US93.
This route would be about 1400 miles, and might take you 22-23
hours...doable in two days.

Don't do it. With the price of gas, it is cheaper to fly. Also, that
long a haul is so exhausting that you are going to ruin for first two
days in Vegas in a recovery phase.

Tom
You are exactly right. Even with a vehicle that gets great gas milage, you
can fly cheaper.

The only problem is that he is coming from Shreveport, which is about a
long equidistance from Dallas, Little Rock, and New Orleans. He
couldn't fly SWA out of Dallas to Vegas (stupid law), and would be
going in the opposite direction if he had to drive to N.O. Small town
predicament. I know--why not just stay and gamble in Shreveport--said
to have a grand casino in the Horseshoe among others????

I have made two cross country trips and both times I made
better time than I pre-planned. When your in an endless
wasteland of interstates the miles just roll off with
75 mph speed limits, it's easy to make 700 miles a day
without bring tired, unless you make a lot of stops.

Find a hotel on the north side of Phoenix. Plenty of them right
alongside I-17. You want to avoid that morning commuter traffic.

You're NUTS!

I recently did that trip (Vegas to Florida and back), towing a
trailer with the bikes inside and drive long distances regularly.

As far as YOUR trip. It's 1400+ miles. 700-800 miles a day driving
alone is doable and SAFE.

1250 miles the first day is stone blind crazy.

Besides, you're better off on I-40 over I-10.

Alternative routes?
Shreveport to Dallas, then I-44 to Oak City. I-40 west to either
Amarillo, or Albuquerque and check into a hotel. Next day, drive
through to Las Vegas.
Post by Dakota Mon
Suggestions?
Yes.... Have a good highway car or truck.
Post by Dakota Mon
Tips for travelling such a long distance?
Bring a small cooler for inside the car and another larger cooler for
the trunk (to store LOTS of ice and bottled water). Buy a case of
bottled water and drink lots of it. Have a Valentine One radar
detector. Go to AAA and get a "TripTic". They're worth their weight
in gold. Stop every 3 hours to take a pee and stretch. Fill your
gas tank whenever it gets to 3/4 empty (or whenever gas is cheap).
Bring MANY CD's (books on CD are a great way to pass the time), or
have a Satellite radio installed, or bring your 40GB I-pod.

Thanks in advance.
It's an easy 2 day trip. Don't push your luck by trying to save a
few hours.

You must be a glutton for punishment taking the long way around.
From Shreveport you'd be better off going to the DFW area on I-20,
then northwest on US 287 (4 lanes) to Amarillo and then west on
I-40 to Kingman, AZ and then on US 93 to Las Vegas. You need at
least 2 full days to do it safely although you can manage in a
day and a half if you want. OKC to Las Vegas is 19 hours and
OKC to Shreveport is 6 hours ... however you can shortcut that a
little and without running a trip program that is the route
I'd recommend to you based on my familiarity with the routes you
mentioned. Also plan on the Texas portion of the trip in daytime to
avoid that state's dumb 65 mph night speed limit which IS
enforced. Most of those roads will be 70 mph daytime.
