Discussion:
SR 32 To Cincinatti from the East?

Hi. I'm going to travel from Philadelphia to Cincinatti and I HATE the
PA Turnpike. I've planned a route through MD and WV to Rt 50 which I
guess turns into SR32. My map tells me SR32 is a multilane highway,
but I know nothing about the road at all.

I am looking for suggestions or opinions in regard to SR 32. Is it a
65mph quick mover without crossroads? Or is it a 45mph highway with
crossroads and towns?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

IRC SR32 parallels US 50 through Ohio and is generally rather
faster than US 50 as the latter runs through Chillicothe
and Hillsboro. US 50 isnt what I'd consider a fast road, the
section through WV is mountainous reaching an altitude of
1600 ft at one point.

SR32 is a good road. Heavy truck route.
Been years since I've used it but I doubt if the state has upped it to 65mph
for cars.
It's possible. Lots of crossroads. Lots of little towns.
Truckers go that way as a shortcut when going from cincinnati to charleston.
A few hills to contend with but not like the Pa Pike.

As an alternate suggestion for US50 in Md, I would use I-68 and I-77.
US50 in Md. is a mountainous road and for that reason, trucks stay off it.
US50 will cross I-77 and you can continue east there.
From that point it's decent driving.

It should take you 8- 10 hours in a car depending on how you drive.
Just be watching for the Ohio smokies on 32, they do patrol that road
heavily.

Take I-68 across the panhandle of Maryland to Morgantown, WV, then go
south on I-79 to Clarksburg. Pick up US 50 there. It's a good rural
four-lane road between Clarksburg and Parkersburg, and I'm presuming
the speed limit will be 65 mph because most of the Appalachian
four-lane corridors in WV are signed at 65. (It was still 55 mph the
one time I drove that route, years ago).

You will have to go through downtown Parkersburg because the Ohio
River bridge for the corridor is not finished yet, and there is
construction in the area. As soon as US 50 crosses into Ohio, OH 32
signage begins.

In Ohio, I have only been on the route from the WV line back to where
OH 7 splits off, and then again from US 62 west to I-275. There are
occasional traffic signals on the route, and a few miles of commercial
development as you get closer to I-275, but it is generally a good
route and many here recommend it.

Wow. You guys really know your way around! Thanks for the input. It
sounds like a southern route, altho possibly a bit longer than the
PA-TP route, may provide more entertainment yet still a relatively
smooth ride. If nothing else at least it will give my 2-year-old
daughter something to look at instead of cement barriers for mile after
mile after mile on the TP.

Thanks again,

Like another poster noted watch your speed...it is 65 in places, others
55-60...so it changes. The cops will not give you 10 over.

Whats your final destination in the 'Nati?
If downtown, may want to stay on SR 32 when it drops to 2 lanes (past
I-275), take a right on Church (?) St in Newtown (4th light after divided
highway ends...Or take a right on Roundbottom (3rd light), left at 1st stop
sign at the car wash, then a right at the 1st stop sign on that street. Both
ways will take you over the Little Miami to US 50..take a left and follow US
50, thru Mariemont---on the historic register and one of the first
completely planned communities, and along Columbia Parkway...nice scenic way
to approach downtown... A right on Red Bank Road after Mariemont will take
you to I-71, depending on time of day may be sloooow

Going that way downtown is a royal PITA even in a car let alone a truck.
Unless you have nothing else better to do.
Not to mention one can get easily lost if not familiar with the areas.
Get on to 275 heading to kentucky.
Get off at "River Rd." ["river downs" and "coney island"] exit.
Follow that east into town.
Otherwise run across the river and take I-471 into town.
That way gives you a nice view of the city skyline as you go down the hill.

I've always enjoyed the ride in a truck.
If you're hauling hazmat from cincinnati out east, you almost have to go
that way because it ain't allowed on the PA pike without some headaches
involved.
If you have the time, stop at sideling hill on I-68 just after you get on
it.
Great views.
Once you head out of parkersburg, the ride will become very scenic and a ton
better than seeing all that interstate.

Just worked the route on "trip maker" and found the difference in mileage
is actually only 40 miles.
568 for all expressway, versus 608 for the scenic route.

OH 32 has very few driveways, with a mix of interchanges and
crossroads, including several traffic lights. It has a speed limit of
60 mph across Ohio, except in the Cincinatti area. It does not travel
through any towns and is a very fast road.
<http://roadway.home.comcast.net/html/ohio6> US 50 in West Virginia
(west of I-68) is very similar. It has a speed limit of 65 mph and
does not pass through any towns. The only trouble spot is Parkersburg,
where you will have to go through town as the expressway bypass is
under construction and not yet complete.

Tom,

SR 32 is an excellent road, and I would highly recommend it. Most of it is
signed at either 60 or 65 mph, depending whether it is full-freeway or
expressway (with crossroads) in any given section. I can't recall more than
a handful of lights along the whole stretch from Athens to Cincinnati.
