I realize that the bulk of it is two-lane, but what is the road (Mex. 1,
IIRC) like in Baja? Considering spending a week in Cabo, and wondering
if driving is reasonable. What's the distance? Minimum two-day drive
from I-8, right?

TIA, Arthur

There's a website I found a few months ago with very vivid advice on
driving the road. It's paved, gas is sometimes hard to get, the road is
often in bad shape (potholes, boulders, etc), but at least it appears to
be fairly safe. Apparently, the biggest advice they had was to gas
wherever you could (except for some stations they listed as
risky/fraudulent.)

I decided to go find the website for ya.

The worst places on your Baja Drive will be CataviƱa - where gas is
scarce or highly overpriced syphoned out of 55 gallon drums on the back
of pick ups. Do not spend the night in CataviƱa either! Banditos come
out of the rocks and rob you in your sleep.

There will be some dangerous curves and mountain passed where you could
get clipped by a semi (lots of dangerous semi trucks on the roads) and
"of course" stray animals around almost every turn (it seems)... but it
is still a wonderful experience. I used to drive it every 3 months for
about 4 years in the late 90?s, you kind of miss some of the experience.
And yes it can be done in two days - don?t drive at night and trade off
the driving with a partner.

Have a good one amigo!

I have driven from San Diego to La Paz many times. I take 2 to 3
days, depending
where I am when I stop. I always like to stay the night at Bahia de
Concepcion because
it is so beautiful there. When you see the blue sign saying gas
134km, that is true.

The reason you don't want to drive at night is the chance of hitting
cattle. I almost
hit a horse. Cattle like the edge of the roads because that is where
the grass grows.
If you drive at night, use high beam. It is hard to hit a cow if you
are behind a truck.
Driving tired is the biggest danger.

I like driving a diesel mercedes down, have had no problems with the
roads, even
the wash outs from hurricanes were not a big deal.

The most beautiful part of the drive is the Baja California Sur.

This Aug my wife and I are taking a road trip up to Maine. Can anyone
recommend some "must see" places? I love the ocean and have always wanted
to see some of those coastal fishing villages.

Tks
